Sandy thrashed the blankets off his bed and twisted in the sheets, soggy from the sweat of his exertions—

Tree limbs grabbed his face, clawed his shirt. The steady yap of the hounds moved closer and closer. He leaped over a rock and landed behind a towering wall of logs. His heart beat like the frantic wings of a moth he’d once caught in a jar.

On the porch of a dilapidated shack a tiny girl huddled into her bony knees. He could almost see her face, but the dogs raced toward him. He strained to see. Then he whispered a name to himself, but he couldn’t remember what he said.

The hounds were almost upon him. The little girl snatched a look his way as if she could see him crouching behind the logs. Then she looked over her shoulder like she too feared the barking, and dashed into the shack. He wanted to wait for her, but the panicked thudding of his heart drowned out the frenzied yipping of the dogs. He hurtled to his feet, stumbled over a fallen tree and ran blindly through the forest.

"Lora!" Sandy screamed, sitting up amidst scrambled blankets and sheets. His breath came in short gasps. His heart pumped wildly. Nameless, faceless monsters filled the dark, and he began crying.

His fingers scrambled over each other, searching the dark for the side of the bed. He swung his bare feet to the floor, scurried to the bedroom door, pulled it open and padded down the hall to his mother’s room. Jiggling the knob, he pushed the door open.

"Mommy," he wailed.
